WHO IS AN ENT DOCTOR AND WHAT DOES HE DO?

An otolaryngologist (ENT specialist) is a physician specializing in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases affecting the ear, nose, and throat (ENT), as well as related anatomical structures, including the paranasal sinuses, larynx, and lymph nodes of the head and neck.

Diagnostic and Therapeutic Procedures Performed by an ENT Specialist

During a consultation, the ENT specialist conducts a comprehensive assessment of the patient’s condition, including medical history review, clinical examination, and, if necessary, additional diagnostic tests. The following diagnostic methods may be used:

  • Visual examination of the ENT organs using specialized instruments.
  • Audiometry and tympanometry to assess hearing function.
  • Endoscopic examination for detailed visualization of internal ENT structures.
  • Laboratory tests and microbiological studies to identify infectious agents.

Based on the identified pathology, treatment may involve medication therapy and, if necessary, surgical intervention.

Conditions Treated by an Otolaryngologist

An ENT specialist diagnoses and treats a wide range of conditions, including:

  • Ear diseases: Acute and chronic otitis media, eustachian tube dysfunction, cerumen impaction, tympanic membrane perforations, and hearing loss.
  • Nasal and sinus disorders: Rhinitis, sinusitis, maxillary sinusitis, nasal septal deviation, and nasal polyps.
  • Throat and laryngeal conditions: Tonsillitis, pharyngitis, laryngitis, and adenoid hypertrophy.
  • Chronic ENT disorders: Allergic rhinitis, chronic tonsillitis, and voice disorders.
  • Functional breathing and hearing impairments: Nasal congestion, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), snoring, and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome.

When Should You See an ENT Specialist?

It is advisable to schedule an appointment with an ENT doctor if you experience any of the following symptoms:

  • Persistent nasal congestion and difficulty breathing through the nose.
  • A sensation of ear fullness or hearing loss.
  • Ear pain or tinnitus.
  • Sore throat, hoarseness, or frequent tonsillitis.
  • Chronic cough or headaches related to ENT conditions.

Regular check-ups with an otolaryngologist help ensure early diagnosis and prevent complications. Do not delay a consultation if you notice any symptoms indicating possible ENT disorders.
